Pharmaceutical Wastewater Treatment

Pharmaceutical wastewater isn’t like industrial wastewater from other sectors. Its complexity stems from the sheer diversity of compounds involved. A single facility might discharge wastewater containing:

  • Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) – biologically active molecules that persist in water environments and disrupt aquatic ecosystems
  • Organic solvents – used in synthesis and extraction processes
  • Disinfectants and cleaning agents – including quaternary ammonium compounds
  • Heavy metals – from catalyst use or equipment corrosion
  • High biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) – from fermentation byproducts and organic compounds

Many of these contaminants are resistant to conventional biological treatment. APIs, in particular, pass through standard treatment processes largely intact ending up in rivers, groundwater, and eventually drinking water supplies.

This makes pharmaceutical wastewater a regulatory and environmental priority and a technical challenge that demands specialized expertise.
