Effective irrigation water management, water is a critical resource for sustainable development, particularly in a semi-arid country like South Africa. To secure our future, we must rely on non-traditional water resources and use them wisely. A key part of this is irrigation water management: the process of timing and regulating water applications to meet crop requirements without wasting water, soil, nutrients, or energy.

In simple terms, irrigation is applying water to soil to provide the moisture essential for plant growth. It is vital for increasing crop yields and ensuring stable production, making it essential for economically viable agriculture in regions like ours.

A promising, non-traditional water source comes from our cities and towns. This used water, or wastewater, is often seen as a waste product to be disposed of. However, it can be a valuable resource, containing both water and nutrients that benefit agricultural production. The most cost-effective approach is to use this water for agriculture close to the urban areas where it is generated.

Key Considerations for Successful Irrigated Farming

For irrigation to be successful, especially when using re-purposed water, several factors must be considered:

  • Water Quantity and Scheduling: Applying the right amount of water at the right time.
  • Water Quality: Ensuring the water meets safety and quality standards for agricultural use.
  • Availability: Understanding current and future water production to ensure a reliable supply.
  • Regulatory Guidelines: Complying with all regulations for water re-use.
  • Infrastructure: Having appropriate storage facilities, networks, pumping systems, and irrigation methods.
  • Soil and Plant Health: Preventing salt accumulation in the root zone and managing plant nutrients optimally.

Water Scarcity in Rural Communities

Many of South Africa’s rural communities are in semi-arid areas with little, seasonal, and erratic rainfall. In these areas, water is a highly valuable resource that supports economic activity and promotes hygienic conditions. Over the last few decades, rapid development and urbanization have increased the demand for domestic water, straining conventional water sources beyond their limits for these communities that rely on subsistence agriculture.
