Different Configurations for different aspirations

Different configurations for different aspirations by adopting innovative technologies and sustainable practices we can transform wastewater
A white modular water treatment unit labeled "fluence aspiral" is installed outdoors at an industrial facility under a cloudy sky, offering different configurations for different aspirations.

Table of Contents

Different configurations for different aspirations, it’s time to rethink our approach to wastewater management and water scarcity. Instead of just reacting to problems, we need a solutions-oriented mindset.

By adopting innovative technologies and sustainable practices, we can transform wastewater from an overlooked byproduct to a valuable resource. Advanced treatment methods, such as membrane filtration and biological processes, allow for the recovery of clean water, nutrients, and even energy. These solutions not only alleviate water scarcity but also contribute to a circular economy, where waste is minimized, and resources are continually reused. Collaboration between governments, private sectors, and communities is essential to drive these initiatives forward and ensure a more resilient and water-secure future.

What is Domestic Wastewater?

Domestic or municipal wastewater comes from household activities like washing, laundry, cooking, and toilets. It’s generally less contaminated than industrial wastewater, but even small amounts of pollutants can harm the environment.

There are two main types of domestic sewage:

  • Blackwater: Wastewater from toilets.
  • Graywater: Wastewater from all other household sources.

What makes Fluence’s MABR technology so special?

At the heart of our Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) is a self-respiring, spirally wound membrane that passively delivers oxygen directly into the wastewater. This unique process has several benefits:

  • Efficient Bacteria Growth: The oxygen-rich membrane supports the growth of an aerobic bacterial biofilm on its surface. Simultaneously, anaerobic bacteria thrive in the rest of the tank.
  • Simultaneous Nitrification-Denitrification (SND): This symbiotic environment allows for SND, a process that traditionally required multiple steps and chambers, to occur in a single tank.
  • Proven Technology: While not new, MABR is a mature and proven technological breakthrough. It cuts aeration energy use by up to 90% and overall energy use by as much as 50%. Instead of mechanically pumping bubbles, MABR allows air to pass through the membrane passively at near-atmospheric pressure, with a portion of the air used for mixing periodically.

Solution-Oriented Configurations

We offer two main MABR configurations to suit different needs:

  • SUBRE: These MABR modules are designed to upgrade existing wastewater plants by simply being submerged in the current chambers.
  • Aspiral™: This self-contained solution is available in various sizes, with treatment capacities starting at 20 m³/d, depending on your specific requirements.

Case Study

A revolutionary approach to water supply

To cope with a crippling and prolonged drought crisis, MEB installed a containerized desalination plant at Richards Bay, South Africa. The project was completed in just seven months. The containers were easily transported to the designated location.1
