Decarbonizing steel production in South Africa, the global shift toward clean energy is driving a significant increase in demand for steel. To align with global energy and climate goals, the steel industry must cut emissions by at least 50% by 2050, with the ultimate aim of achieving net-zero emissions beyond that. According to the IPCC report, several technological innovations have been identified to enable very low to zero emissions in steel production.
The Traditional Steel-Making Process and Its Challenges
Conventional steel production relies heavily on carbon-intensive methods. The process begins with coal, converted into coking coal in a coke oven. The coking coal is combined with iron ore in a blast furnace to produce liquid iron, which is then refined into steel in a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). The blast furnace stage is responsible for the bulk of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with steel production, making it a critical area for innovation and change.
Green Steel: A Zero Carbon Breakthrough
Enter “green steel,” a groundbreaking process that replaces coking coal with green hydrogen. This method, known as hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI), has already been successfully tested in pilot-scale furnaces and is approaching commercial scalability. Using renewable energy, the hydrogen-based iron is further processed into steel in an electric arc furnace. This innovative approach has the potential to eliminate nearly all GHG emissions from steel production, marking a pivotal step toward sustainable manufacturing.
