South Africa has large amounts of inland brackish and saline groundwater. Poor small rural communities have to deal with severe constraints in terms of the quantity and the chemical quality of the water supply. Saline water sources, such as brackish ground water, are often available.

Drinking water that is not properly purified, can cause your kidneys to overproduce urine in order to expel the excess salt from your body, leading to dehydration. Brackish water is treated through the desalination process.
