Brackish Water Seawater and Freshwater, while many factors affect water quality, have you ever considered the risk of drinking saline water?

Recent research funded by Indiana University Bloomington has revealed a troubling link between increased salt levels in drinking water systems and a rise in cardiovascular diseases, particularly in coastal regions. Climate change is a primary driver of this issue, causing sea levels to rise and contaminate freshwater sources. Human activities like over-extracting groundwater and constructing canals further worsen the problem.

Studies have shown that regularly drinking water with high salinity can negatively impact cardiovascular health and is linked to issues like diarrhea and abdominal pain. A study in coastal Asia found that communities drinking high-salinity water experienced more hospital visits and a range of other negative health effects.

So, what are the different types of water based on salt content?

  • Freshwater: This is what we rely on for drinking. It has a very low salt concentration (less than 0.05%) and makes up only about 1% of all water on our planet—a tiny amount considering global demand.
  • Brackish Water: This water is saltier than freshwater but not as salty as the ocean. It contains 1,000 to 15,000 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of dissolved solids.
  • Seawater: This is the saltiest water, with dissolved salt content ranging from 15,000 mg/L to over 40,000 mg/L.

The evidence is clear: households exposed to high-salinity water face more frequent hospitalizations. Unfortunately, many people in these areas are unaware of the health risks. As climate change continues, water salinity will become an even greater public health concern. Raising awareness is the first step, allowing governments to create effective policies and mitigation strategies to control this emerging threat.
