For the most part, our acute human reactions to problems, need urgent rethinking. It’s time to take a different approach and gain control of how we approach the challenges arising from wastewater management and water scarcity. We have got to adopt a more solutions-oriented mindset to wastewater treatment and management.
Domestic Wastewater
There are two types of domestic sewage: blackwater (wastewater from toilets) and graywater (wastewater from all sources except toilets).
Wastewater derived from human activities in households such as washing, laundry, dishes, garbage disposal, lavatories etc is described as Domestic or Municipal Wastewater and usually contains smaller amounts of contaminants than industrial or commercial wastewater, but even small amount of pollutants can make a big toll on environment and its inhabitants.
What makes the MABR so special?
At the core of the MABR, a self-respiring, spirally wound membrane sleeve works passively to deliver oxygen directly into the wastewater, this assists with the growth of bacteria. The much needed aerobic bacterial biofilm forms on the large surface area of the oxygen-rich membrane, while anaerobic bacteria flourish in the anoxic environment in the rest of tank.
This symbiosis allows for simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND), a process that once required multiple steps and chambers.
Not new to the global market, but mature and proven enough to be considered a major technological breakthrough. MABR systems cut aeration energy use by up to 90%, and overall energy use by as much as 50%. Instead of only mechanically pumping bubbles, with MABR the air passes through the membrane passively. This passive aeration of the mixed liquor takes place at near-atmospheric pressure. Periodically, a portion of the air is used for mixing.
Solution Orientated Configurations
SUBRE upgrades wastewater plants using membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) modules, that are placed in existing chambers at a plant.
Aspiral is available in several model sizes and configurations, treatment capacities start at 20 m³/d, depending on effluent requirements and other parameters.
