Water sensitive urban design in Africa, fifteen years ago, the world reached a milestone: for the first time in history, more people lived in urban areas than rural ones. Today, Africa and Asia are the only continents where this is not yet the case, but their cities are growing rapidly.
With rapid urbanization comes numerous challenges, particularly in managing water resources effectively.
African cities, in particular, face issues such as insufficient infrastructure, water scarcity, and pollution, which are exacerbated by climate change and increasing population densities. Water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) offers a sustainable solution to address these challenges by integrating urban planning with water management principles. WSUD focuses on enhancing the use of natural systems, promoting water reuse, and minimizing environmental impacts while improving urban resilience. This approach not only ensures the availability and quality of water but also contributes to creating healthier and more liveable cities.
As urban areas expand, they face significant water management challenges. Changes in urban streams and declining water quality are often the first warning signs. When rain falls on surfaces like roofs, roads, and footpaths, it picks up oil, metals, litter, and other pollutants before flowing into our waterways. This runoff can lead to more frequent and severe flooding, channel erosion, and the destruction of aquatic habitats.
Water-Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is a modern approach to managing the urban water cycle, which traditionally focuses on three pillars:
- Potable water supply
- Wastewater management
- Stormwater management
WSUD integrates these pillars to create a more sustainable system. For centuries, innovators have developed methods to manage water in cities. Today, these water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems form an extensive network that directs water throughout the urban environment.
At MEB, we help you coordinate and plan your next water or wastewater project with a more fluid approach to technology implementation. We ensure that the different departments involved in your organization’s water services work together efficiently to achieve their goals.
