The Department of Water and Sanitation estimates that South Africa loses roughly 37% of its treated water to non-revenue losses, primarily through leaks and burst pipes. In KZN, some municipalities report even higher rates. Every liter lost to infrastructure failure is a liter that never reaches a household, hospital, or school.
