The Nirobox™ Desalination System

Rows of white shipping container units with mounted air conditioning, illustrating the key advantages of modular desalination, are positioned in a paved outdoor area surrounded by grass and trees under a partly cloudy sky.

Nirobox™ units utilize reverse osmosis (RO) to remove salt, minerals, and impurities from raw water sources. There are different variations of the Nirobox™ to handle specific types of feed water. For example, the Nirobox™ SW treats seawater, the Nirobox™ BW treats brackish water while the Nirobox™ FW treats freshwater. Because the system is modular, organizations can easily scale their water production by adding more containers side-by-side as demand increases

What are the key benefits of using Nirobox for water desalination?

Deploying a modular desalination unit offers several distinct advantages over constructing a conventional water treatment facility.

Choose the Nirobox™ system if rapid deployment matters more than centralized, mega-scale production. The Nirobox™ are pre-assembled and tested in a controlled manufacturing environment, the on-site installation process takes weeks rather than years. Site preparation only requires a flat concrete pad and basic pipe connections.

Additionally, the Nirobox™ system features a remarkably small physical footprint. A single 40-foot container can produce up to 1,500 cubic meters of fresh water per day. This compact design allows organizations to place the desalination plant close to the point of use, reducing the need for extensive pipeline infrastructure.

Cost efficiency represents another major benefit. The integration of energy recovery devices ensures that the Nirobox™ consumes far less electricity than older desalination technologies. Furthermore, the system includes advanced automation and remote monitoring software. Facility managers can control the entire desalination process from a smartphone or tablet, drastically reducing the need for on-site personnel and lowering operating expenses.

Whether addressing the needs of small communities, industrial facilities, or remote sites, MEB delivers customized approaches, built around sustainability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Trust MEB to be your partner in achieving a consistent, high-quality water supply.

A revolutionary approach to water supply

To cope with a crippling and prolonged drought crisis, MEB installed a containerized desalination plant at Richards Bay, South Africa. The project was completed in just seven months. The containers were easily transported to the designated location.1
