The Future of Wastewater Treatment Is Here

Aeration is the engine of biological wastewater treatment and in conventional systems, it’s also the biggest drain on energy budgets. In fact, aeration alone can account for more than 50% of a treatment plant’s total electricity consumption. For municipalities and industrial facilities already under pressure from tightening discharge regulations and rising operating costs, that’s an unsustainable reality.

Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology changes the equation entirely -and MEB Energy is leading its implementation across industries.

The Problem with Conventional Aeration

Traditional biological treatment systems force massive volumes of pressurized air into deep tanks, creating bubbles that rise to the surface. The inefficiency is significant – the majority of the oxygen within those bubbles’ escapes into the atmosphere before the microorganisms responsible for breaking down pollutants can ever absorb it. Energy is wasted. Treatment efficiency suffers. And operational costs remain stubbornly high.

How MABR Works – A Smarter Approach to Oxygen Delivery

MABR technology fundamentally reimagines how oxygen is delivered to the biological treatment process through a method known as bubbleless aeration.

Instead of pumping air into open tanks, MABR uses gas-permeable membranes to transfer oxygen directly and continuously into a biofilm a dense layer of microorganisms that forms on the membrane surface. This direct, highly efficient oxygen transfer means:

  • Up to 90% oxygen transfer efficiency compared to as low as 10-15% in conventional bubble aeration systems
  • Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) within a single reactor stage, eliminating the need for separate treatment tanks and reducing infrastructure costs
  • Significantly lower energy consumption – MABR systems can reduce aeration energy use by up to 50% compared to conventional activated sludge processes
  • High-quality effluent output that consistently meets stringent nutrient removal standards for nitrogen and phosphorus
  • Compact footprint – the biofilm-based design allows for higher treatment capacity in a smaller physical space, making MABR ideal for retrofitting existing facilities or deploying in space-constrained environments

Simultaneous Nitrification and Denitrification – Why It Matters

One of MABR’s most significant technical advantages is its ability to achieve SND in a single reactor. In conventional systems, nitrification (converting ammonia to nitrate) and denitrification (converting nitrate to nitrogen gas) require separate treatment stages with alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions-adding complexity, cost, and energy demand. MABR’s unique biofilm structure creates both aerobic and anoxic zones within the same membrane system, streamlining the process and dramatically reducing both capital and operational expenditure.

At MEB Energy, we don’t just supply MABR technology we engineer complete, customized treatment solutions built around your facility’s specific requirements. The process begins with a detailed analysis of your influent characteristics, discharge targets, and site constraints. From there, our engineering team designs an MABR based system that integrates seamlessly with your existing infrastructure or serves as the foundation of a new, high-performance treatment plant.

The MABR solutions deliver:

  • Reduced energy costs from day one
  • Consistent compliance with local and international discharge standards
  • Lower chemical consumption through optimized biological performance
  • Minimal sludge production, reducing disposal costs
  • Scalable design that grows with your operational needs

Whether you operate a municipal wastewater facility, a food and beverage plant, a mining operation, or an industrial site, MEB Energy has the expertise and technology to help you treat water smarter, cleaner, and more cost-effectively.
