Specialists in water resource management humans can access just one percent of all water on Earth's surface

Specialists in water resource management, Water distribution across Earth’s surface is strikingly uneven. Only 3% of surface water is fresh-the remaining 97% fills our oceans. Of that precious freshwater, 69% sits frozen in glaciers, 30% flows underground, and less than 1% exists in lakes, rivers, and swamps. This means humans can access just one percent of all water on Earth’s surface, with 99% of that usable supply hidden underground.

Water resources management encompasses planning, development, distribution, and optimization of water resources while controlling usage and maintaining quality standards.

The Growing Crisis

Water scarcity stems from rising freshwater consumption paired with dwindling available resources. Global water use has grown at more than double the population growth rate over the past century. An increasing number of regions now approach the sustainable limit for water service delivery, particularly in water-stressed areas. Rapidly expanding urban centers will intensify pressure on groundwater resources, worsening scarcity.

Currently, 100 countries share surface waters from 13 major waterbodies. Thirty-one countries already face water shortages, and by 2025, that number will climb to 48. The UN projects that by 2050, water shortages will seriously impact 4 billion people.
