Fast Tracking the water and energy transition, when we know better, we do better. Local economic development in South Africa is shifting toward place-based policies-an approach built on the belief that communities understand their own needs best. Successful policies require engaged societies that actively participate in shaping their own priorities.
The energy and water transition represents a pathway toward transforming these sectors to achieve zero-carbon operations by the second half of this century. Central to this effort is the urgent need to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions and limit climate change.
The National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA) was launched during the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit as a collaborative initiative between South Africa and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with financial support from the South African Department of Trade and Industry (the DTI) and the Governments of Austria and Switzerland.
NCPC-SA focuses on the private sector, including individual enterprises, sectoral organizations, and selected special economic zones.
Their mandate is to:
- Grow awareness in South Africa
- Provide assessments and advice to enterprises across all industry sectors
- Facilitate value-added outcomes through investments in cleaner technologies
- Build capacity among the industrial workforce, management, government, service providers, and students
- Contribute to national priorities such as energy savings, water quality, and waste minimization through efficiency
- Support the creation of green jobs through clean production capacity building and recycling
- Promote innovation and collaboration between industries and research institutions to advance sustainable practices
- Advocate for policy changes that encourage environmental responsibility and sustainable development
- Raise public awareness on the importance of sustainable consumption and production patterns
- Foster partnerships with international organizations to align with global sustainability goals
- Ensure long-term economic growth by integrating sustainability into business models and industrial operations
MEB continues to make strides toward leading industry and communities to better, more sustainable, solutions-driven implementation approaches. With us, you have endless possibilities to create lasting solutions that are adaptable and aligned with national clean production goals.
