Clean water is an essential part of living a healthy and safe life. Unfortunately, many communities around the world don’t have reliable access to clean water. This is largely due to the lack of access to proper innovative solution for wastewater treatment.

The consequences of this lack can be dire; without access to clean water comes a lack of sanitation, increased health risks, and environmental damage. The good news is that advances in wastewater treatment technology are helping communities around the globe cope with water shortages and pollution.

MABR (Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor) Systems are one such technology. Designed by Fluence and Implemented by MEB, these innovative membrane aerated biofilm reactors provide effective treatment for municipal wastewater systems in southern Africa. The high-quality pre-assembly process in the MABR allows us to create one powerful wastewater treatment solution that can be applied in many different applications and locations, helping communities in need access clean water with minimal resources and energy expenditure.

MABR: An Innovative Solution for Wastewater Treatment

Today, wastewater treatment is essential for protecting the environment, and the MABR membrane aerated biofilm reactor is leading the way in domestic wastewater treatment. This innovative solution uses naturally occurring bacteria to break down organic matter in wastewater, allowing for the recovery of clean water and reusable solids. The MABR reactor system is also highly efficient.

The benefit of this solution reduces the overall cost of wastewater treatment and make it possible for communities around the globe to cope with water shortages and pollution challenges. Furthermore, MEB operates as a turnkey service provider for municipal wastewater treatment in various sectors.

The Process

Wastewater treatment plants, like the MABR, are used to remove pollutants from municipal wastewater and operate based on a multi-step biological process.

The process begins with the preliminary step which involves screening large debris out of the influent before it enters the plant. Thereafter, the water is sent to the primary settling tanks where those items that did not get removed by the large screens settle at the bottom, depending on the overall design of the plant, of course.

Next, the water proceeds to the biological treatment step where it is exposed to bacteria which break down organic contaminants and other pollutants. After biological treatment, the secondary tanks allow more matter to settle to be separated from the remaining liquid waste.

MABR systems cut aeration energy use by up to 90%, and overall energy use by as much as 50%. Instead of actively pumping bubbles, with MABR the air passes through the membrane passively. This passive aeration of the mixed liquor takes place at near-atmospheric pressure. Periodically, some air is used for mixing.

Finally, disinfectant chemicals are added to kill off any remaining pathogens to make sure that they don’t end up back in local waterways or homes. This last step is usually referred to as tertiary treatment and helps produce water that has fewer contaminants than what was originally taken into the plant for processing.
