Better Potable water management, making it safe for drinking, serves various purposes in an aircraft, including use in lavatories, for passengers’ drinks (water, coffee, tea), and sometimes even for showers in premium classes.

Ensuring passenger comfort during flights is of utmost importance, making it crucial to load an appropriate amount of potable water onboard. However, the issue arises when some aircraft have the capacity to carry more water than necessary for regular airline operations. Unfortunately, very few airlines have implemented specific policies regarding potable water usage.

The amount of potable water to be taken onboard is determined during flight planning, adhering to the airline’s rules and potable water policy. The ground crew loads this water into the aircraft’s water tank before departure.

The task of estimating the right quantity of potable water to carry onboard is indeed challenging. Underestimating it can lead to passenger discomfort, as water consumption can vary significantly between flights. Conversely, overestimating it poses a different challenge, potentially burdening the airline with substantial costs.

To tackle these challenges, it becomes imperative for the aviation industry to grasp better, sustainable potable water management practices. Airports are significant consumers of water with studies indicating figures of around the average usage of water for an airport is around 6,5 to 10 litres per passenger.
