Government has announced short-term interventions that are currently being implemented to address the water and sanitation challenges in a growing number of municipalities around the country.
During a recent briefing, it was announced that between August 2023 and March 2024, an improved wastewater technology solution has to be installed at one of its ailing plants which will treat the wastewater better and increase the quality of discharged effluent into the nearby River. It is extremely important to reduce the levels of E. coli in the treated wastewater to ensure the life and dignity of communities and the environment is protected.
MEB is an experienced multidisciplinary firm with a core a mandate to improve drinking water provision to residents of the communities affected by declining water quality, by designing and implementing robust and modular water and wastewater treatment plants (‘package plant’).
The South African Water Services Act caters for the reuse of wastewater for non-drinking purposes. However, we all now know that the future of wastewater reuse is not limited to non-potable applications. It is a key approach to augment existing water supply.
Package plants can treat thousands of Megaliters of water a day, which can then be fed into this piped water distribution system of the municipality. The best thing about these solutions is that they do not require excessive amounts of new piping or connections and can be easily integrated into an existing connection between the Water Treatment Works and the piped water distribution system of the community.
Water supply and sanitation infrastructure has always been designed for different capacities is to serves in its life cycle, thus making the efficient provision and use of water and wastewater treatment a holistic approach. It needs the various stakeholders to come together to overcome the still inflexible bureaucratic hurdles. Even with over-regulation and the rural-urban divide, South Africa’s economic and service supply disparities are still crippling the country with large potential.
